Welcome Back from Rachel Tackley and Victoria Beechey
Tonight, after ten extraordinary months of transformation, The Arts Theatre opens its doors once again – and we can’t wait to welcome you back.
Standing in our beautifully reimagined auditorium as the lights rise, the seats fill, and the energy returns to the building has been a moment of immense pride for everyone here. This has been a once-in-a-generation renewal, and we are thrilled to finally share it with you.
Our transformation has only been possible thanks to the remarkable generosity of Lord David Sainsbury through the Gatsby Charitable Foundation and Dame Susie Sainsbury through Backstage Trust. Their support has enabled us to revitalise both our auditorium and backstage spaces – creating greater comfort and accessibility for audiences and significantly improved facilities for the artists and crews who bring each production to life.
Alongside our physical renewal, you’ll also notice something new in the air (and online): our refreshed brand and website, designed to reflect the energy, ambition and creative vision of this next chapter.
And what better way to reopen than with Sleeping Beauty? A story of awakening feels like the perfect fit for a theatre ready to dream big again. This season is particularly special as we celebrate our beloved Dame, Matt Crosby, marking his twentieth pantomime with us here in Cambridge. Matt’s warmth, wit and generosity have become woven into the very fabric of this place.
Thank you for being part of this moment. Whether you’re joining us tonight, joining us later in the season, or have yet to book for our fantastic new programme, we’re so grateful for your support.
Here’s to joy, laughter, and a generous measure of panto magic – because, after all, Cambridge needs the Arts.
With warmest festive wishes,
Rachel & Victoria
