Rachel Tackley Awarded MBE for Services to the Arts

Rachel Tackley, Creative Director and Co-Chief Executive of The Arts Theatre Cambridge, has been awarded an MBE in the King’s New Year Honours List in recognition of her outstanding services to the arts.

Rachel, who lives with her family in St Neots, has led The Arts Theatre through a period of remarkable transformation, re-establishing and re-energising the organisation following the closure and redevelopment of the building.

Under Rachel’s artistic direction, and alongside a brilliant project team, the Theatre has successfully reopened its doors, welcoming audiences back to a revitalised building and reasserting its place within Cambridge’s cultural life.

Commenting on the award, Rachel said:

I am extremely honoured to receive this award. Theatre is always a collective endeavour, and this recognition is shared with the extraordinary artists, staff, volunteers and supporters I have had the privilege to work with over many years. I fundamentally believe that the arts play a huge part in the wellbeing of local and national communities, – giving voice to different experiences and strengthening our tolerance and understanding. Working in Cambridge has shown me just how much theatre can mean to people – bringing us together, opening up conversations and enriching our lives. I am proud of what we have achieved together at The Arts Theatre and excited for what lies ahead.

Nigel Hugill, Chairman of The Arts Theatre Cambridge, said:

First and foremost, this honour deservedly recognises Rachel's absolutely exceptional contribution over a lifetime in theatre. The timing could not be more appropriate. The Arts Theatre is transformed and speaks loudly once again to the power of live performance which Rachel holds most dear.

Alongside her work in Cambridge, Rachel is a highly respected theatre consultant, producer and curator, producing and programming work across the UK and internationally. Throughout her career, Rachel has led and helped strengthen many major arts organisations, including Riverside Studios, Chichester Festival Theatre, Milton Keynes Theatre and English Touring Theatre. She has also worked extensively with UK Theatre and Arts Council England advocating for artists and audiences, supporting the development of new work and championing the vital role of regional theatre.

Rachel was appointed as Interim Creative Director and Co-Chief Executive of The Arts Theatre Cambridge in 2024 and is now focused on shaping the next phase of the Theatre’s transformation. This includes plans for a new studio theatre, alongside the creation of a bold and ambitious programme that reflects the Theatre’s commitment to producing and presenting new work and enriching community engagement.
