Our Archive

A range of materials from the theatre archive including old photos and programmes

Our archive boasts a bounty of material - correspondence, reviews, photographs, autographs, and posters - providing an unprecedented insight into historic moments and dramatic firsts for the Theatre and the industry.

Since 1936, The Arts Theatre has been bringing world class performing arts to the region. Our archive boasts a bounty of material - correspondence, reviews, photographs, autographs, and posters - providing an unprecedented insight into historic moments and dramatic firsts for the Theatre and the industry.

In 2019, we undertook a project to better understand our archive, ensure its safekeeping, and improve accessibility for future generations.  Our archive is now carefully looked after by the Theatre and Performance Collection at the V&A East Storehouse. A digital catalogue of all material is available online.  For all research queries or to enquire about making a donation please use the contact form here.

We are fortunate to have received a large number of programme donations from our audience members over the years. As such, we are unable to take in large collections of additional programmes or archive materials at our Theatre.

The preservation and enrichment of our archive was made possible by the National Lottery Heritage Fund. Thanks to National Lottery players.
